Old Gin House in Statia
Overview
Join us for a week of beautiful diving on St Eustatius in the Dutch Caribbean with Subaqua Dive Center.
Dates: April 22-29, 2023
Statia is one of the best kept secrets in the Caribbean. It’s an undiscovered small island unaffected by mass tourism. This is not your average Caribbean island – imagine the Caribbean about 25 or 30 years ago and you get the idea. The reefs surrounding St. Eustatius are flourishing in a protected marine park. Underwater you will experience what much of the Caribbean must have looked like many years ago. The eye-catching volcano “the Quill” dominates the island with its impressive crater and is responsible for the huge amount of lava flows and blocks under the surface.
There are thirty-six dive sites around the island that can be accessed by boat ride of between five to twenty minutes. These dive sites include unexplored reefs, wrecks, pinnacles, and walls. Some of the most popular dive sites include the Charlie Brown, one of the biggest wrecks in the Caribbean; Grand Canyon, full of pinnacles; Barracuda, steep walls with old lava streams and beautiful corals and tons of reef fish and barracuda; Double Wreck, a spot with tons of old stones that colonial ships used during their trips that are now covered with coral and sponges as well as teeming with stingrays; Chein Tong, a Taiwanese shipwreck that is home to turtles and a variety of fish. The diver-to-guide ratio is very low and safety is the top priority. The Scubaqua Dive Center has all of the world-class dive amenities you’ll need and is located next to The Old Gin House.
There are several underwater archaeological sites – most of these are ancient ships covered in coral. However, there is one site called the Blue Bead Hole. The blue beads hold historical importance in St. Eustatius. They were used as a reward for slaves in the 17th century. Good luck finding one! The one thing that you won’t see in Statia is other large groups of divers!
We’ll be diving twice each morning and once in the afternoon except for the Friday which will be two morning dives only.
Access to Statia is through St Maarten then by high speed ferry or small aircraft.
